Greek Society of Nephrology
The objective of this year’s meeting will be to focus on ways to improve the outcome of patients with kidney disease. As the prevalence of renal disease increases, especially in Greece, it is imperative that we find ways to identify individuals with renal disease early, that we improve and implement therapies aimed at slowing or reversing the renal damage, and that, for those patients who have developed end-stage renal failure, we optimize renal replacement therapy, being dialysis or transplantation, to improve life expectancy and quality of life. On the first day, Friday, the emphasis will be on the epidemiology of renal disease and end-stage renal disease in the Greece, with special attention to the Southeast, and to discuss new programs to diagnose early renal damage. On the following day, there will be a state-of-the-art lecture on the treatment of glomerulonephritis, followed by concurrent sessions. On the physician’s pathway, we will address a variety of topics in clinical nephrology: pregnancy and the renal patient, hypertension in African-Americans, anti-proteinuric strategies to achieve remission or renal disease, update in lupus nephritis, and an in-depth discussion of dialysis catheters and vascular access management. For other health professionals, there will be presentations on the nutritional management of patients with renal insufficiency and end-stage renal failure, the detrimental role of acidosis on muscle function, new issues related to anemia management, and sexual dysfunction in the renal patient.
The last day will be allocated to an in-depth review of clinical issues related to renal transplantation: access and barriers to transplantation, the transplant evaluation process, living donor programs, new legal initiatives, new immunosuppressive strategies, and long term complications of transplantation. This will be followed by an expert panel discussion, with an open forum discussion among all participants in the meeting.
